The Summer Beauty Hacks you Need to Know About
While summer brings with it lots of beautiful things, it also spells dry and damaged hair and skin that get affected by the elements if not cared for. Here’s what to look out for.
Sun, salt & chlorine
We’re all too familiar with dry and damaged hair and skin that starts to emerge as early as July thanks to our scorching summers – and our bodies are not to blame considering the temperatures they have to contend with. But being aware of the factors that affect hair and skin can go a long way in helping you protect them.
Lyon Xuereb, Manager of the Pharmaceutical Division at Reactilab Ltd, says sun, salt water and chlorine are the main culprits. “Sun rays are a good source of Vitamin D for the skin, but too much exposure leads to irreparable skin, scalp and hair damage. A dermatologically-tested sun cream with high SPF will help protect the skin, although it is always recommended to avoid staying in the sun during the peak hours of the day. Just like sun protection creams, the application of scalp and hair protectants will help prevent the hair and scalp against sun damage.”
As for salt water and chlorine, Lyon explains that while a good swim in the sea is known to help soothe skin irritations and sterilise wounds, overexposing oneself to salt water causes skin to dry and hair to tangle and dehydrate. “Apply a hair conditioner before taking a dip in the water, as the conditioner helps to protect the cuticle from absorbing too much salt water. Differently from sea water, pool water is rich in chlorine which is known to be damaging for the skin and hair. It is always advised to spend limited time in contact with chlorine, and to rinse with tap water every time after leaving the pool to wash the chlorine off.”
Go natural
With an increase in health awareness, people have adopted a healthier approach which is not only diet focused, but also directed towards the types of cosmetics they choose. “Chemical products such as SLS in shampoos and parabens in skin products are two of the most common chemicals found in hair and beauty products. Until recently, many were not aware that long-term exposure to such chemicals causes allergic reactions and irritations, but we’re noticing that the trend is shifting towards opting for more natural products.”
“Natural sun creams, designed for the protection of the face and body in adults and kids, are essential. Sun damage on the skin is one of the major factors that contributes to premature aging, and natural sun creams offer a delicate touch to the skin while at the same time thoroughly protecting skin against the sun,” says Lyon. Following this are natural hair products. “One of the most common problems in both men and women is hair loss. Although hair loss in men is a predominantly genetic condition, in women it tends to be a stigmatic subject caused by various factors, ranging from pregnancy to stress or chemical damage. Natural hair products help to reduce hair root damage resulting in stronger, healthier hair.”
Lastly, facial and body moisturisers rich in vitamins are worth stocking up on. “Vitamins help the skin maintain its radiant look. The daily application of natural, vitamin-rich moisturisers for both face and body help to reduce wrinkles while keeping the skin moisturised,” explains Lyon. “Daily application of moisturisers also helps to improve circulation in the body. Blood circulation helps to maintain oxygen-rich blood flow to body extremities, which in turn helps the skin look healthier and aids cell growth.”
