The Pros and Cons of Eloping
Running off to get married sounds romantic, but there’s a lot to think about.
Eloping is fairly uncommon in Malta, but it’s not unusual. It’s not the first time a bride and a groom to be have looked at all the work, family drama and expenses that go into a wedding, and just balked. However, there are plenty of factors to consider before you do elope. And while the beauty of an elopement lies in its spontaneity, it’s better to think about your options before the wedding when it’s not too late.
PROS
1. You’ll save money
There’s no getting around it okay? Weddings are expensive. Running off to get married will save you a lot of money, even if you jet off to get married somewhere exotic. And you may feel that it’s money much better spent – you get to marry and have a honeymoon, all rolled into one!
2. You can enjoy the day with the one person who matters the most
If you have a big wedding, you will inevitably have to spend a lot of time talking to various people whom you may not even know very well, when all you want to do is enjoy the company of your new husband or wife and bask in the glow of being happily married. When you elope, there isn’t that sort of responsibility resting on your shoulders.
3. You can have it your way
This also applies to a traditional wedding of course, but with lots of different opinions coming at you from all angles, it’s all too easy to put your hands up and surrender control. When you elope, you’re doing it 100 per cent the way you want to.
CONS
1. Your family and friends will most likely be upset
Even if they are understanding of the reasons why you did it, your nearest and dearest may feel robbed of being part of the happiest day of your life. Make sure you tell them beforehand what you’re planning to do, and take plenty of photos so that you can relive the day together. You can also consider having a small post-wedding celebration when you come back.
2. You’ll need to look into the legal issues
You still need an officiant and a witness to be legally married, and many countries have different residency requirements in order to be married there, so you must do your research thoroughly before you set off.
3. You might feel robbed of the traditional wedding experience
While planning a traditional wedding may seem quite daunting, you may regret not having had your big moment in the sun, as well as your loved ones around you on the day. If the planning process is what’s bringing you down, consider hiring a wedding planner to alleviate the stress and anxiety of planning a big event.
