A Pre-Honeymoon Checklist For the Trip of a Lifetime
From ensuring your travel documents are up-to-date to securing the best deals, here’s a checklist of everything you need to do before you say ‘I do’ to the honeymoon of your dreams.
In the run up to your wedding, your honeymoon will doubtlessly be a far-off mirage in your mind. Between the dress fittings and food tastings, it’s hard to imagine that, in a few shorts months, you and your new spouse will be jetting off as Mr and Mrs to the destination of your choice. But it’s true!
With that in mind there is plenty to plan. From ensuring your travel documents are up-to-date to securing the best deals on travel and accommodation, we’ve prepared a checklist of the things you need to do before you say ‘I do’ to the honeymoon of your dreams.
ONE YEAR TO GO
Think Money: So much about your honeymoon will be determined by how much you can afford to spend, so discuss this before you do anything else. Of course it’s fine to be a little extravagant at such a special time in your lives, but don’t risk getting into debt for the sake of a vacation so early on in your life together. Discuss, compromise and enjoy the planning process – it’s part of the fun!
Shop Around: These days you can find all sorts of good deals online, but it is worth visiting a handful of travel agents to see what your options are. They will be able to guide you on the best destinations to suit your chosen time of year, as well as the most popular resorts and best-value airlines.
Book Stuff: If you’re able to, book as much as you can this far ahead. For one thing, it will mean you’re not scrambling and booking things last minute, but it also helps you to make the most of early-bird deals that may no longer be available in a few months’ time.
SIX MONTHS TO GO
Food and Culture: Believe it or not, some of the most popular things to see and do in your chosen destination could get booked up six months in advance – so confirm them now. Whether that’s a table at the best restaurant in town or tickets to the hottest music event, you’ll be glad you did.
All In Order?: Depending on where you’re going, you may need a special type of travel document (such as a visa) – so now’s the time to investigate that. Even if you don’t, be sure to check your passport is up-to-date and to renew it if not. Meanwhile, look into whether you need vaccinations or medication for your trip.
Insure Yourself: While you can leave buying your insurance to the last minute, we don’t recommend it. Instead, look at your options, shop around for the best deal and book it well ahead.
THREE MONTHS TO GO
Careful Planning: By now most places will have a good calendar of events for what is to come, so explore online and start planning the nitty-gritties, whether that’s theatre performances, exhibitions or fun days out.
Pack (Mentally): You’ll actually end up packing in the mad couple of days before your wedding (and that’s perfectly normal), but do try to run through things before that in your head. Do you need new luggage? Will there be special supplies you require (such as camping gear, or sports equipment)? Would you like a new camera to take with you? Make a list and action it over the next couple of weeks.
ONE MONTH TO GO:
Reconfirm Everything: From transport to hotel booking and everything in between. Keep printed proof as well.
Shop: You will need weather-appropriate gear, so have a look around local stores, or shop online and have them delivered.
Print Things: Print off extra copies of important documents (passport, ID card, driver’s license, insurance, itinerary, phone numbers) and each carry a copy with you.
Pack: Try to do this as early as you can – perhaps as soon as you can get a useful weather forecast for your destination.
Go Over Everything: Just one last time, check your tickets, passport, visa, currency, itinerary, weather and suitcases to guarantee you’re sorted and ready to go.
Finally… have a happy honeymoon – with all the very best from us at Our Wedding!
