UPDATED - The Most Expensive Pink Diamond in The History of Pink Diamonds Sold at Auction

Auction house Sotheby’s sold this stunning ring to a private buyer over the phone for €28 million

This stunning, pear-shaped and immensely rare vivid pink diamond, which has been named by auction house Sotheby’s as the ‘Unique Pink’, went under the hammer in Geneva on Tuesday and was sold to an unnamed, Asian private buyer over the phone for a staggering €28 million.

The diamond, described as “supremely rare and exceptional”, weighs a jaw-dropping 15.38 carats, and has been given the highest possible grading – vivid pink – by the Gemological Institute of America, the highest body for grading diamonds.

Auctioneers were expecting this beauty to fetch around $38 million (roughly equivalent to €33 million). Although it fell short of the estimated price, it is still the most expensive, fancy vivid pink diamond ever to sell at auction.

Sotheby’s – the auction house that sold this gem as part of its Magnificant Jewels and Noble Jewels sale on May 17 – claimed the reasons why this diamond is so rare and sought-after are primarily because of its colour, staggering weight, as well as its sheer clarity and exceptionally pure structure.

David Bennet, worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewellery division, told Reuters “the colour is so strong. That makes it a very rare stone indeed, in fact, it’s the largest pear-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond ever to be offered at auction.”
