Unconventional Food Bar Ideas
Cheese and sweet tables have become the norm at weddings, but if you want your big day to be different from the rest, you’ll need to think outside the box. Here are some ideas for original and on-trend food bars that will entice your guests and leave them raving about your wedding long after it’s over.
The fruit stand
This is ideal for a summer wedding – what better way to quench your thirst and cool things down than with a few slices of peach, some fresh strawberries, a couple of melon cubes or a handful of fresh cherries. It is visually impactful, will certainly appeal to the health-conscious foodie and a great way to beat the heat.
Bread and condiments
A build-your-own bread bar is sure to be a success – reserve a table with different kinds of bread prepared in easy-to-eat slices and an array of complimentary sides, such as different types of oils, pates, pickled foods, Italian delicacies and Maltese ones too. Use earthy, wooden tableware and platters on which to display the food, giving the entire table a rustic twist.
The taco station
A tasty, tempting taco will go down a treat late into night, especially when a few too many drinks might have gotten the better of your guests. Opt for unique toppings such as pulled pork, wild sea bass, fresh salsa and cilantro lime onions among others, and transform an ordinary taco stand into a magnificent one.
Paired cheeses
Rather than splurging on an abundant cheese table which will turn into a downright mess once people lay their hands on it, opt for a selection of paired cheeses served on standing forks (keep clear of plastic – wooden or silver ones will look far better). Blue cheese with walnut and cranberry, manchego and fig spread, camembert and jalapeno and parmigiana with salami are just a few ideas.
The sushi station
A sushi bar is an elegant and sophisticated addition to your food selection, but bear the guest list in mind before booking it. Older guests are less likely to opt for sushi over something more wholesome and homely, and if your wedding is a small one and know that your guests don’t go crazy for fish, move on to another bar (such as pizza one, perhaps?). If you’re going for it though, opt for a modern bar with an arrangement of sashimi, popular rolls such as tuna and California ones as well as some fresh tempura.
A potato corner
Create a retro-themed spud bar featuring a range of popular potato dishes, such as wedges, fries, portions of mash, sweet potato options and tater tots, which guests can take individual portions of and dress to their heart’s content with a variety of cheese and sauce toppings.
Cookies and milk
If children will be attending your wedding, you’ll know where to find them, but rest assured the adults will get hooked too. Dedicate a food table to an array of cookies and biscuits – cherry and oatmeal, lemon, raspberries and white chocolate, macademia and white chocolate, as well as the classic chocolate or double chocolate chip, accompanied by jugs of fresh milk and coffee, and let your guests dunk away
The ice-cream bar
Just like the fruit bar, a small cone with a refreshing scoop of ice-cream will rescue your guests from melting point during a hot, summer wedding. Have somebody man the stand and create grab-and-go ice-cream cones in a variety of flavours and toppings, keeping it simple but fresh and downright original.
