The Groom’s Guide to Choosing the Perfect Shoes
We get it, shoe shopping isn’t your cup of tea, which is why our simple guide to shoe styles for the groom is going to make your life a whole lot easier!
STEP 1: CHOOSE THE STYLE
If you’re not familiar with the different styles available when it comes to formal shoes, rest assured, you’re not alone! In fact, there’s quite a variety of shoe styles out there for men, but the majority can be broken down into three basic categories.
The Oxford: The most formal style of shoe out there is also the one you’re likely to be most familiar with – a classic style featuring closed lacing which is favoured by most grooms.
The Loafer: If you’re more of a fashion conscious groom, you’ll likely be considering a pair of loafers – a slip-on style that is usually reserved for less formal occasions, but does exist in elegant varieties that will look great on a groom.
The Derby: Similar to the Oxford, this is another closed lace style that features two flaps that wrap around the shoe’s tongue. These offer more of a casual look, which is perfect if your wedding is less formal.
STEP 2: CONSIDER THE MATERIAL
While the upper part of your shoes should always be leather, it’s also recommended to go for leather when it comes to the soles too, rather than rubber – it will look far more sophisticated. If you’re buying a new pair of shoes for your wedding, it’s always best to wear them around the house and break them in before the big day. You’ll be far more comfortable!
STEP 3: COLOUR DECISIONS
When it comes to choosing the colour for your shoes, the choice, if you’re looking to keep it formal, isn’t exactly vast. You have two options: black or brown. If your wedding is very formal, black is preferable, and if your suit or tuxedo is a dark colour (excluding navy), black is also the recommended choice. Brown, meanwhile, looks great with blue suits, and also suits a more casual outfit.
CASUAL SHOES: NO-NO OR WAY TO GO?
Depending on the style and theme of your wedding, it’s not totally unheard of to go for an altogether more casual shoe option, and inject a bit of fun into your look. Wearing a pair of Converse of Vans will lighten the mood, but do make sure they’re nice and clean for the occasion!
