The Five Best Wedding Films Of All Time

Looking to shake off some pre-wedding nerves with your bridal party, groomsmen or significant other? There’s no better way to do so than with a movie marathon. Here’s OurWedding’s pick of the top wedding movies of all time.

My Best Friend’s Wedding

This 1997 hit comedy – featuring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney – never gets old. Julianne Potter (Roberts) makes a pact with her best friend Michael O’Neil (Mulroney) during college that if they’re still single by their 28th birthdays, they’ll marry each other. Close to the landmark event, Michael tells Julianne he’s engaged to the beautiful Kimberly Wallace (Diaz), who asks Julianne to be her maid of honour, and comedy ensues when Julianne tries all she can to stop the wedding from happening.

My Big, Fat Greek Wedding

Released in 2002, My Big, Fat Greek Wedding takes a hilarious peek into Greek-American culture. The plot revolves around Toula (Nia Vardalos, who starred in and wrote the film), who falls for an American man, Ian Miller (John Corbett). Her Greek family has a hard time accepting their relationship, and after Ian pops the question, they interfere with every detail of the wedding, guaranteeing a good laugh. Despite never reaching the top spot at the box office, this film still stands as the highest-grossing wedding film of all time. If you love this one, look out for My Big, Fat Greek Wedding 2, scheduled for release in March 2016.

Wedding Crashers

Hilarious pair Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson gave us this memorable comedy in 2005, and it’s still funny more than a decade later. Womanisers Jeremy (Vaughn) and John (Wilson) spend their free time crashing weddings, and appeared to have mastered their craft until they decide to crash a high-profile wedding, which is when they hit a bump in the road. Wedding Crashers was a box-office and critical success, and set the bar high for this duo’s subsequent films together.

The Hangover

This 2009 side-splitting comedy will banish your wedding jitters in an instant, and even if you’ve watched it already, it will do you no harm to watch it again and again (and again.) Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) travel to Las Vegas for a bachelor party ahead of the impending wedding of their close friend Doug Billings (Justin Bartha). After an intense night of partying, they have no recollection of what they did the previous night, and begin a man-hunt for the lost groom ahead of his wedding day.

Bridesmaids

Ahead of your big day, book a date night with your bridal party and enjoy the female-driven laughing fest that is Bridesmaids. Released in 2011, this plot of this romantic comedy centres on Annie (Kristen Wiig), who – after a series of misfortunes – is asked to be her best friend Lillian’s (Maya Rudolph) maid of honour. Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey co-star as Lillian’s bridesmaids, making up the best, or worst, bridal party imaginable.
