Maltese couples in civil unions: the figures
OurWedding shares the latest stats from the Public Registry.
Since the legalisation of Civil Unions in April 2014, which permits same-sex couples the same rights by law as other married couples (including for housing, social housing, pensions, children’s allowance and widows’ pensions), 70 Maltese and 5 Gozitan couples have applied for a Civil Union, according to statistics obtained by OurWedding from the Public Registry. The data refers to the period between April 2014 and October 2015.
Of these, 56 Maltese and 5 Gozitan couples have since entered a civil union, whereby a ceremony was conducted and appropriately registered.
Furthermore, 10 couples who entered a civil union abroad have registered their status in Malta according to law, which states that, in order to register a foreign civil union in Malta, one of the parties has to be of Maltese nationality.
