How George Clooney Proposed to Amal – and She Didn’t Realise!
The Hollywood heartthrob and the human rights lawyer tied the knot in Venice in September 2014, but it recently emerged that the British-Lebanese beauty took her time to give Clooney an answer, throwing his carefully-crafted plan out the window…
In a recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres on her wildly popular chat show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, George Clooney revealed how he proposed to his beautiful wife Amal, and how it took her 25 minutes – the entire duration of a playlist he so carefully prepared for the momentous event – for her to realise what he was doing, and accept his proposal.
“It was about six months into our relationship that I thought I might pop the question. We didn’t talk about it, it wasn’t like ‘oh maybe we should get married’, so I plotted the whole thing out myself – I had the ring hidden behind her, there was music playing, I cooked dinner,” said Clooney. “So she got home, she had just come back from London, and she suggested ordering in but I told her I had made dinner. I had it all set up, the song was coming up, and at that moment she gets up to wash the dishes, which she’s never done!
“Finally, when she gets back I tell her to reach into a box behind her – I blew out the candle [on the table] and told her ‘I think the lighter is in the box behind you’. She pulls out the box and looks at it and simply says ‘it’s a ring’, like somebody had just left it there [by mistake]. So then I get down on my knee and I said ‘I can't imagine spending the rest of my life without you’ and she kept looking at the ring then looking at me and saying ‘oh my God’. We now know, because there was a playlist going on, that it took 25 minutes [to get an answer]. Then finally I literally said ‘look, I hope the answer is yes but I need an answer because I’m 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon.’ And then she said ‘yes’!”
Known as one of Hollywood’s favourite bachelors for a long time, DeGeneres teased Clooney that he couldn’t blame Amal for thinking a proposal would never happen, and Clooney agreed, admitting not even he thought he would get married again. Despite the successful outcome of his proposal, however, it just goes to show that no matter how painstakingly you plan it, some things are simply left up to chance!
