Bridal Party

Do Your Bridesmaids’ Accessories Have to Match?

If you’re not too keen on different dresses for every bridesmaid, let their personality shine through with their choice of accessories. Afraid they’ll look mismatched and shabby? Here’s how to accessorise them with style.

While symmetry and uniformity help achieve neatness and order, you want to avoid a cookie-cutter look where all members of your bridal party are a reflection of each other. The women you choose to form your bridal party are likely to be important people in your life, so let their individuality come through, with your guidance.
Start by setting parameters for what you do and do not want – for instance, if they are to wear jewellery of their own, ask them to stick to the same family of pearls, diamonds or crystals, and limit the number of accessories to a necklace and earrings only, or earrings and a bracelet only, depending on the style of their gown. If you’re going jewellery shopping together, opt for different items within the same collection, so that, while they’ll look different from each other, they will at least complement one another. Whichever route you take, you should have the final say on what they choose – everyone should be happy with the outcome.

Less is definitely more

If your bridal party’s dresses have enough personality of their own, you might want to consider foregoing accessories altogether. There’s no rule which dictates that bridesmaids have to wear jewellery – it is up to you to decide whether they can do without them or not. Remember simple is elegant, and one statement piece, such as a sparkling bracelet or modest pair of earrings can make enough of an impact.

Complement the bride

Alternatively, have your bridesmaids wear pieces that reflect your choice of jewellery on the day. If you’ve opted for a chunky pearl collier, have them wear a simple string of pearls. If your hair will be adorned with delicate crystals and pearls or with a statement headpiece, they can each wear a similar-style piece in their hair. Consistency can come in the form of a similar, rather than identical look, which will ultimately help create a unique appearance that works together and is aesthetically appealing.

Say it with a gift

Most brides-to-be give the members of their bridal party a unique and memorable gift, so you can skip through all the above and give your bridesmaids a pretty piece of jewellery which they can in turn use on your wedding day, and cherish for many more years after. Seeing as your bridal party are dear to you, you should know what they love and hate, so try and pick something with them specifically in mind. This also allows you to graciously indicate what you’d like them to wear on the day – after all, no one should turn down a gift.
