For many brides, the wedding veil is more than just an accessory – it’s the finishing touch which completes a bride, and makes her exactly that: a bride! But of course, as with anything else, there are veils, and then there are celebrity veils. And these veils worn by some of our favourite celebrities are among the most iconic.
1. Meghan Markle
For the most anticipated wedding of 2018, Meghan Markle wore a Givenchy gown accompanied by a 16ft-long veil. The stunning veil was embroidered specifically with the signature flowers of all the countries in the British Commonwealth. She also adorned her veil with the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau Tiara on the day.
2. Priyanka Chopra
The Bollywood star’s wedding to Nick Jonas, the celebrations for which were spread over days, drew parallels to the aforementioned royal wedding. But one of the most iconic parts of Priyanka Chopra’s many looks was her 75ft veil by Ralph Lauren, which needed a team of six people to carry it!
3. Kate Middleton
Another gorgeous veil was that worn by Kate Middleton back in 2011. The veil was made of layers of soft, ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers, done by the Royal School of Needlework. Her accompanying halo tiara was made by Cartier in 1936.
4. Lady Diana
And how can we not mention Lady Di’s epic 80s wedding look? The late Princess wore a 153-yard tulle veil, valued then at around £151,000, becoming one of the most famous veils in the world that was longer than her train. She also opted to wear the Spencer family tiara, an 18th-century heirloom.
5. Grace Kelly
For the wedding dubbed as ‘the wedding of the century,’ Grace Kelly wore a circular wedding veil which was waist length at the front and then gradually longer towards the back. The veil used 90 yards of tulle and was edged with lace, but was left sheer in front to provide an unobstructed view of the bride’s face while walking down the aisle to meet Prince Rainier III of Monaco.
6. Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe had three weddings, but her wedding to Arthur Miller in 1956 was pretty iconic. She wore a body-hugging gown with a deep neckline and ruffled sleeves. Her veil was completely in line with 1950s trends, and also gorgeous in its simplicity.
7. Gwen Stefani
In her first marriage to Gavin Rossadale, Gwen Stefani wore a custom Christian Dior gown designed by John Galliano. Classic wedding dress elements combined with show-stopping volume and a painted hot pink bottom half made her wedding attire choice a pretty unforgettable one. She topped off the ensemble with an antique lace veil.
8. Kate Upton
The model and Vogue cover girl wore a dramatic veil for her nuptials to Detroit Tigers pitcher, Justin Verlander. Her dress was a traditional, frothy one with lace sleeves, perfect for the romantic setting created at their Tuscan wedding, and was accompanied by a staggeringly-long veil fit for the occasion.
