You only get to be maid of honour a few times in your life (at best) and you want to do your bestie proud by helping her out on a jam-packed day. Here are the things you MUST keep in mind:
1. Get up early and run through the day
Check and double check that everyone in the wedding party knows their positions and roles on the day. Are they ready?
2. Keep tabs on hair and makeup
Ensure everything runs smoothly by overseeing the schedule for hair and makeup: which bridesmaid is having her hair done first? And, while that’s happening, is there someone else who can be having her face done?
3. Be of support to your bestie
Your friend is getting hitched – a huge moment – so be her shoulder to laugh or cry on. It’s bound to be a day full of emotions, so, have the tissues ready.
4. Coordinate the photographer
The photographer is likely to come early, but make sure, whoever he or she is, does not get in the way yet is able to get those moments you’ll all remember for the rest of your lives.
5. Check the dress
The bridal gown, that is. Your bestie’s seamstress should be on hand, helping the bride get dressed, but make sure there are no threads coming out of the veil and that your friend is comfortable and confident.
6. Keep your friend watered and fed – throughout the day!
When you’re getting married, it’s so easy to forget the most essential things: to eat and drink! Be on hand to remind the bride to drink some water and to eat SOMETHING – she needs to maintain her energy levels up, up, up.
7. Make sure the little ones are fine
The youngest members of the wedding party should not be forgotten. These little helpers need a little bit of monitoring, so keep a careful eye out for them!
8. Oversee the distribution of the wedding souvenirs
During the reception, as the bride and groom circulate, saying their thanks to their loved ones, be on hand to make sure you have enough of those wedding souvenirs to give out.
9. Don’t forget that skirt!
This is not to mean you need to follow the bride wherever she goes but that long dress can be a hassle to manage! Be on hand to help out in those awkward moments and corners – your bestie will be extremely thankful!
10. Make sure everything is wrapped up nicely at the end
That means, making sure the wedding dress has been picked up (if the bride has changed into a going-away outfit); ensuring all the items in the storeroom have been cleared and that there are no stragglers. Above, all, though, tie up all the loose ends so you can say ‘good job!’.
