The Canadian singer, born Claire Boucher, and billionaire Tesla Motors CEO revealed that they Grimes and Elon Musk welcomed another second child, a baby girl named Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, via a surrogate back in December.
Nicknamed ‘Y’, Exa Dark Sideræl is the second child for Grimes and Musk’s eighth.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Grimes shared that the name ‘Exa' refers to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, or the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations a second.
‘Dark’, she explained, represents “the unknown.”
“People fear it, but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,.” Grimes said. Sideræl, pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el”, is a “more elven” spelling of sidereal,
“The true time of the universe, star time, deep space-time, not our relative earth time,” she explained.
The name, Lord of the Rings fans will be happy to note, is in honour of Grimes’ favorite character from the fantasy trilogy, Galadriel, who “chooses to abdicate the ring”.
She followed up said interview with a tweet, saying, “I did this to speak about my work, not ‘reveal all’. Definitely held back a lot, contrary to the headline. I didn’t mean for them to find out about my daughter, so please respect her privacy as I’d love her to be able to live as private of a life as possible.”
