Weddings are an expensive affair, but royal weddings probably take the cake in that department. Royal weddings around the world are known to go all out, have all-eyes on them at those very moments. The event is never not elaborate and it’s unsurprising that the total cost is a bomb. We’re taking a look at one particular aspect of the big day: the wedding dress. Here we count down the six most expensive royal wedding dresses so far, with numbers having been crunched by the people at The Sun.

Number 6 – Sarah Ferguson

Coming in at number six, the Duchess of York wore a £35,000 (nearly €40k) wedding dress when she and Prince Andrew tied the knot at Westminster Abbey on 23rd July 1986. The gown was designed by Lindka Cierach and feature a 17-foot-long train that had A and S embroidered.

Number 5 - Meghan Markle

Next we have one of the recent royal weddings. Meghan Markle’s wedding dress which she wore on 19th May 2019 when she married Prince Harry at St George’s Chapel in Windsor cost £110,000 (€125,700). The dress was designed by Givenchy and created by the British designer and Meghan’s friend, Clare Waight Keller. Her iconic 16-foot veil and train also featured the different flowers pertaining to the 53 Commonwealth countries.

Number 4 – Princess Diana

Diana’s iconic David Emanuel wedding dress was bound to make it on this list. Coming in at £151,000 (€172,552),  Diana’s dress, which she wore in July 1981 for her marriage to Prince Charles, featured a 25-foot-long train: the longest in royal history.

Number 3 – Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie also tied the knot recently. In October 2018 she and long-time love Jack Brooksbank tied the knot at St George’s Chapel just five months after Meghan and Harry. Her £200,000 (€228,545) dress was designed by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vo and featured several meaningful symbols such as the York Rose and ivy and a shamrock for Ireland.

Number 2 – Kate Middleton

In second place comes Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding dress worn on the day she married Prince William at Westminster Abbey. Her dress, designed by British designer Sarah Burton from Alexander McQueen (a designer she’s known to favour), was priced at £250,000 (€285,682) and feature lace appliqué, and a gorgeous ivory satin bodice.

Number 1 – Queen Letizia of Spain

A surprising one to take the cake! In 2004, Queen Letizia of Spain married King Felipe VI at the Cathedral Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena in Madrid. Her dress comes in at a shocking £6 million (€6,856,376) – excuse us while we pick up our jaw off the floor – designed by Royal couturier Manuel Pertegaz. But wait, there’s more. She reported had real gold thread embroidery woven into the silk material. It doesn’t get more regal than that!
