Happy Coronation Day! 67 years ago, Princess Elizabeth was crowned Queen Elizabeth in a grand ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey. To commemorate the day, the official Instagram for the Queen shared a regal photo from that day.
“Today marks the 67th anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II,” the Royal Family’s Instagram page noted.
“Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on 2 June, 1953 in Westminster Abbey. Her Majesty was the thirty-ninth Sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey, the setting for every Coronation since 1066.”
“Whilst an occasion for celebration, The Queen’s Coronation was a solemn, religious ceremony that lasted almost three hours. The service has remained essentially the same for over 1,000 years.”
Queen Elizabeth is now the longest-reigning British monarch, surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria in September 2015. She is also the first British monarch to celebrate a Sapphire Jubilee – 65 years on the throne.
