1. Don’t get married on the 13th
We know the 13th is supposed to be an unlucky day, but that means nothing if the church and venue of your dreams is only available on that day! And, even though the ancient superstition still rattles some nerves, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do.
2. You can’t see each other before the wedding
This persistent superstition often gets its teeth and claws into the most modern of gals. It’s a patriarchal tradition, stemming from the times women used to be sold to their prospective husbands (and then scuttled away in case someone else had the temptation), but there’s no place for this in our modern world!
3. You must toss the bouquet…and the garter!
This actually refers to two wedding traditions: the bouquet was traditionally thrown to distract women trying to grab a piece of the bride for good luck (yes, because we’re all mindless goons), while the tossing of the garter was supposed to be proof of the consummation of the marriage. Both reasons are obsolete, and often awkwardly upheld. Ditch!
4. The bride has to be carried across the threshold
This old one. How many new couples actually do this? Ignore the fact that you’re just going to look ridiculous as you move into your hotel room the night of the wedding, why would we want to be depicted as weak? On the other hand, it could be fun to test your new hubby’s gym bod.
5. The groom’s best man has to be male and bridesmaids have to be female
What if your best mate is a guy? For centuries, society was not gender-blind, but many conventions centred on the rules of what men and women could or couldn’t do. Nowadays, the most important thing is to be able to enjoy your special day with the people you love, whatever their gender!
