On this day, 70 years ago, Princess Anne, now Princess Royal, was christened at Buckingham Palace. The Queen’s second child, and only daughter, was born in August 1950. On 21st October that same year, Princess Anne was baptised by the Archbishop of York, Cyril Forster Garbett.

According to the Telegraph, the princess wore a lace christening robe that was initially made for Queen Victoria’s eldest child, Princess Victoria, in 1841. The same robe was also worn by Queen Elizabeth in 1926 for her own baptism.

Princess Anne’s godparents were Queen Elizabeth (her maternal grandmother), Princess Margarita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (her aunt), Earl Mountbatten of Burma (Prince Philip’s uncle), Andrew Elphinstone (the then-Princess Elizabeth’s cousin), and Princess Alice Countess of Athlone (the then-Princess Elizabeth’s great aunt).
