The story of Elia Borg Bonaci Ltd begins when the business was founded by the late Elia Borg Bonaci and his wife Rita on 7th October 1953. At the time, they had 11 children; the youngest being only two months old. Elia was a perfectionist, and the business (a coffee shop plus workshop/dolceria in the basement) started flourishing immediately, making a name for itself with the products and services it specialised in.
In 1964, the bakery moved to Villambrosa Street in Hamrun, where it is still situated today. In 1979, five of Elia’s sons – Carmelo, Saviour, Elia Jr, Francis and Gaetano – formed a company called Elia Borg Bonaci Ltd which started functioning in January 1980. The sons embarked on an expansion programme which also saw the bakery modernised with new high-tech machinery.
The next big step was the acquisition of exclusivity of The Palms reception hall in St Julians in 1994. Over the years, the coffee shop, Café Elia, was enlarged again and yet more new equipment was added. The company has continued to grow over these years with the introduction of new products and services to complement the old ones.
Elia Borg Bonaci Ltd is still very much a real family business today. There is always One of the family members is always present at functions catered by Elia Caterers. The personal attention of the proprietors is always a given.
Although the business was founded so many years ago, that is not to say that it does not include ‘new blood’. Many of the chefs are in fact third generation Borg Bonacis. In all, eight of the young grandchildren work in the family business; eight hopefuls for the future - Elia V., Paul, Katia, Christine, John, Joseph, Antoine and Edward.
