By now, we must all know of a couple (or 10) that have been forced to put off their wedding until an unknown date due to the current health crisis. But while some couples may still be able to celebrate with a romantic dinner and quality time, these two doctors had to report to duty on what would have been their big day.

OB/GYN resident Dr Shelun Tsai and Dr Michael Sun, a resident in the Psychiatry programme, both of whom work at the Duke University Hospital  in the US, might not have had their planned spring 2020 wedding, but their hospital colleagues sure tried to make the day a special one with an impromptu 15-minute ‘commitment ceremony’, bringing everyone present some welcome joy.

Tsai told Good Morning America, “They knew I’d postponed my wedding, but people didn’t realise it was that day until I was there.” She added, “It started out small, that they wanted to make me a wedding dress, then it was a veil, then flowers. And then it became everyone chipping in and jumping onboard.”

The bride-to-be explained how her colleagues started planning the wedding from early morning and in-between patient care, while the brief ceremony was held at 3pm, complete with a paper wedding gown worn over protective gear, paper flowers and family members invited to participate via video call.

“It was absolutely amazing,” she said. “Every day I feel like we take care of our patients and we’re always so thoughtful and love what we do and to see that [we] also care so much about us and the things that mean so much to us, it was really touching.”
