Game of Thrones: The Best On-Screen Couples So Far

After last night's much-anticipated premiere of Game of Thrones Season 7, (don’t worry, no spoilers here), OurWedding revisits its favourite GoT on-screen couples since the series commenced.

7.Robb Stark & Talisa

Not the best place to start considering that Robb Starks’s love for Talisa was the cause of one of the most horrific scenes in the series. Had Robb Stark not fallen head over heels for the nurse and honoured his oath to marry Walder Frey’s granddaughter, Robb and his family would have stood a chance to live and the Red Wedding would have never happened.

6.Ned & Catelyn Stark

They only lasted a season as a couple, but what a couple they were. Ned and Catelyn Stark were possibly the only happily married couple in the Seven Kingdoms, despite the constant prick in Catelyn’s side that is Jon Snow, i.e., Ned’s bastard son.

5.Samwell Tarly & Gilly

As a Man of the Night’s Watch, Sam is forbidden from lusting over Gilly, but these two make an adorable couple despite them not really being a couple. Gilly teaches Sam about life while Sam impresses Gilly with his knowledge and worldliness, and we can’t overlook how noble Sam has been for caring for and protecting Gilly, and for saving her and her child from the White Walkers.

4.Grey Worm & Missandei

There’s something remarkable about these two, especially since Grey Worm is teetering in forbidden territory. The two shared their first kiss in season 5, which sparked a flurry of questions, not least because Grey Worm is an Unsullied, and has been conditioned from a young age to not feel empathy, fear or any feelings whatsoever, sexual or otherwise. His physical limitations have enabled them to connect on a much deeper level though – in fact, Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays Missandei, said their relationship “is a lovely beacon of sweetness and purity, in a way, in such a corrupt, violent world.

3.Jon Snow & Ygritte

Jon Snow has captured many a viewer’s heart, but this onscreen couple – and offscreen too! – are simply the best pairing. He is an honest man, a “pretty” one too, and devoted to his cause, while she is wild, unpredictable and rough around the edges. Jon Snow, undercover in the army of wildlings, fell for her, and what ensued was a brief but intense affair, which could be condensed into that one night in the cave. Although it ended with three arrows in the back for Jon Snow, nobody could downplay the downright cuteness, and hotness, of this couple.

2.Daenerys Targaryen & Khal Drogo

Right, so Daenerys was sold to the brutish leader of a thug tribe, and her first encounter with Khal Drogo could only be described as rape. But in typical Daenerys fashion, she turned a disadvantage into an advantage. This couple turned out to be one of the strongest on the show, despite Khal being killed off in season 1. Turns out the strongman is something of a softy, and even tried learning common tongue so he could communicate with his wife. And despite a string of love interests since his death, none of them are quite her Sun and Stars.

1.Brienne of Tarth & Tormund Giantsbane

“When there’s so much darkness, if you give a piece of light, they grab it with both hands,” said Kristofer Hivju, the real-life Tormund, about his character’s budding relationship with Brienne. And that is exactly what their relationship is – a beacon of light, and a touch of comic relief, to an otherwise dark and dreary world. Nobody expected the possible pairing of these two, and – between both of them being pretty masculine – there are no stereotypical gender roles in this couple, which is refreshing in the male-dominated world of Westeros. Go #Torienne. Or #Briemund.

Sorry, we couldn’t help it.
