1. Have a small – and informal – wedding
Let’s just say this loud and clear: you don’t have to have a big wedding, which is just going to stress you out. Don’t bow down to pressure but stand your ground to make sure you have the day you always wanted. You can also make casual part and parcel of your special day – the more laid back the tone, the more attention will be given to the great vibe rather than to forced perfection.
2. Invite a select few to the ceremony
So, you want a big reception (or your parents do) but you still cannot face feeling all those eyes upon you as you recite your vows. A solution is to ask only close family and very close friends to the church or registry office – and don’t be worried about offending anyone! Those who care for you will completely understand.
3. Shine a light on your maids
Many couples give traditional speeches during a sit-down dinner, but here in Malta we’ve always adapted the rules. If you’ve decided against a stand-up reception, there’s no need to also do away with all conventions. Instead, ask your nearest and dearest ladies to stand up and describe what this day means to them. There’ll be few dry eyes in the house by the end!
4. Pre-practise your dance so there are no big surprises or slip-ups
Even if you’ve got two left feet (join the club!), there’s no need to shun the idea of a first dance with your new spouse. Practice makes perfect so, once you’ve selected the song, get some training hours in with your loved one. Bring him up close and focus on the way he makes you feel.
5. Take a time out and enjoy a private moment with your spouse
We know it can all get too much, even for those of us who have confidence in bucket-loads. Speak to your spouse and maid-of-honour before the big day and plan some ‘moments away’ – just enough time to recharge and get ready for the next round of laughter and life-changing experiences with the rest of the gang.
